A historical view of the Larry Vanderhoef Memorial Lecture Series: On November 27th in 2007, the president of UC Davis, Larry Vanderhoef and our former president, Jei-Fu Shaw, represented their own respective schools to officiate the partnership between UCD and NCHU. In 2012, NCHU and UCD established a transnational “NCHU-UCD International Plant and Food Biotechnology Center”, bringing these two Universities to work even more closely together. In the same year, NCHU welcomed Dr. Vanderhoef as a visiting lecturer, where he gave 4 lectures on “The Biology Class for Future Leaders” in a filled auditorium that seats nearly 100.
On May 21st 2017, at our meeting with the UCD Senior Leadership in Hong Kong, we discussed new opportunities to enhance our partnership between two schools and also wanted to honor Dr. Vanderhoef’s significant contribution to NCHU; as a result, we decided to create the Larry Vanderhoef Memorial Lecture to pay tribute to him for many years to come with the Larry Vanderhoef Memorial Lecture. Given that year 2019 also marks 100th year of National Chung Hsing University, we have organized a series of events to celebrate with our alumni and partners from all over the world. With the Larry Vanderhoef Memorial Lecture, we hope that this will not only further deepen the ties between two schools, but also allow more collaboration opportunities between NCHU and UCD in various areas.
In 2019, NCHU has invited 8 prominent professors to give speeches. We had great feedback from all our guests, faculties, and students. The year 2019 was a nice start and we are looking forward to have more Larry Vanderhoef Memorial Lectures in the future.

NCHU is the third-largest comprehensive university in Taiwan with ten colleges including Liberal Arts, Agricultural and Natural Resources, Veterinary Medicine, Life Sciences, Science, Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Management, Law and Politics, and Innovation and Industry Liaison.
The NCHU-UCD Joint Hub is established to form characteristic research areas and to strengthen the collaboration between two universities. In this regard, the NCHU-UCD Joint Hub evaluates and makes recommendations on guest speakers from UCD. By doing so, we also hope to provide opportunities for NCHU researchers to identify collaborators as well to enhance students’ global perspectives and to develop stronger interests in global issues.
In 2019, NCHU has invited 6 outstanding UCD scholars to our Taichung campus to facilitate building a long-term, research relationship with UCD through the NCHU-UCD bilateral research collaboration plan. The year of 2019 was a nice start and we are very excited about what this collaboration will bring to both UCD and NCHU.
